The 13th African Games concluded with a closing ceremony at the University of Ghana Stadium. The Games were held in Ghana for the first time, with the opening ceremony also taking place at the same venue on March 8.

Hosting the competition was a significant achievement for Ghana, and they performed exceptionally well, winning the highest number of medals since the Games began in 1965. Ghana played a pivotal role in the formation of the Games through former President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

Ghana finished sixth on the medal table, earning a total of 69 medals: 19 gold, 30 silver, and 20 bronze. On the penultimate day of the Games, Ghana secured first place in various events, including the Men's 200 Metres Final, Women's Hockey, Men's High Jump, Men's Football, and four gold medals in Boxing.

President Nana Akufo-Addo praised the Ghanaian team's outstanding performance during his speech at the closing ceremony. He commended their dedication, perseverance, and commitment to excellence, highlighting the positive impact of their achievements on the nation and the inspiration they provide for future athletes.

“To each and every member of the Ghanaian team, I commend you for your dedication, perseverance, and unwavering commitment to excellence. Your excellent achievements have not only brought glory to our nation but have also inspired a new generation of sportspersons,” he said.

Although Ghana did not achieve a top-five position in the overall medal tally, Egypt, Nigeria, South Africa, Algeria, and Tunisia secured those spots. Egypt dominated the Games, winning 101 gold medals, followed by Nigeria with 47 gold medals. Egypt will host the next African Games in 2027.
