Ghana celebrates its 67th year since gained independence from the British under the theme "Our Democracy, Our Pride". The celebration took place at Koforidua in the eastern region of Ghana on March 6th, 2024.

Brief history of Ghana

Ghana formerly known as the Gold Coast due to its significant reserves of gold gained independence from the British in 1957, becoming the first British colony to break free from colonial rule.

Post-independence

A pivotal figure in Ghana's journey to independence was Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, who assumed the presidency in 1957 until his overthrow in a coup in 1966. Nkrumah was a pan-africanist who played a major role in the formation of the organization of African unity, and advocated for African unity, the betterment of the lives of workers, and challenging capitalist exploitation on the continent. He famously asserted, "The independence of Ghana would be meaningless unless it was tied to the total liberation of Africa."

Joining Nkrumah in the struggle for Ghana's independence were individuals collectively known as the 'Big Six.' These leaders, associated with the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC), founded by J.B. Danquah in 1947, spearheaded the call for self-governance. Following a peaceful demonstration in Accra on February 28, 1948, where gunfire tragically claimed three lives, the 'Big Six' intensified their demands for immediate self-rule, despite facing arrests. Their imprisonment symbolized Ghana's resolve for self-determination.

Ghana's post-independence era witnessed a blend of progress and challenges. While the 1960s saw significant economic growth, subsequent decades experienced fluctuations, reflecting developmental hurdles. It has also made significant progress in democratization despite its experience in several coups and periods of military rule.

Ghana today in terms of its social and cultural terrain, is renowned for its vibrant music, dance, and art scenes. Ghanaians take immense pride in their cultural heritage and are celebrated for their hospitality and warmth towards visitors.

The nation also boasts several national parks and wildlife reserves, including the renowned Mole National Park and the captivating Kakum National Park, drawing tourists from around the globe. With a predominantly youthful population, with over 60% below the age of 25, Ghana faces both opportunities and challenges. The youthful demographic offers promise for innovation and progress, yet it also necessitates concerted efforts in providing education, healthcare, and employment opportunities for the younger generation.
